Freddie Mercury, whose real name was Farrokh Bulsara, was indeed a British singer, songwriter, and record producer best known as the lead vocalist of the rock band Queen. He was born on September 5, 1946, in Zanzibar (which was then a British protectorate, now part of Tanzania) and later moved to England.

Freddie Mercury’s contributions to rock music are widely celebrated. He possessed an exceptional vocal range spanning four octaves and had a charismatic and flamboyant stage presence that made him a legendary performer. Queen, the band he fronted, achieved significant success and is considered one of the most iconic rock bands in history.

Some of Queen’s notable achievements include the 1975 UK No.1 single ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ which is often regarded as one of the greatest rock songs ever recorded. The band also had over 40 other UK Top 40 singles and the 1980 US No.1 single ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love.’

Apart from his work with Queen, Freddie Mercury also had a solo career. In 1987, he released the single ‘The Great Pretender,’ which reached No. 4 on the UK charts.

Sadly, Freddie Mercury’s life was cut short when he passed away on November 24, 1991, at the age of 45. He died of bronchio-pneumonia, which was a complication of AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). His announcement of being HIV positive, just one day before his death, was a significant moment in raising awareness about the disease and its impact on individuals.

Freddie Mercury’s legacy continues to live on through his music, and he is remembered as one of the greatest rock singers and performers in the history of music.

Lyrics

Oh yes I’m the great pretender (ooh ooh)
Pretending I’m doing well (ooh ooh)
My need is such I pretend too much
I’m lonely but no one can tell

Oh yes I’m the great pretender (ooh ooh)
Adrift in a world of my own (ooh ooh)
I play the game but to my real shame
You’ve left me to dream all alone

Too real is this feeling of make believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can’t conceal

Ooh Ooh yes I’m the great pretender (ooh ooh)
Just laughing and gay like a clown (ooh ooh)
I seem to be what I’m not (you see)
I’m wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you’re still around

Yeah ooh hoo
Too real when I feel what my heart can’t conceal

Oh yes I’m the great pretender
Just laughing and gay like a clown (ooh ooh)
I seem to be what I’m not you see
I’m wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you’re
Pretending that you’re still around
